Unique Hazards

Fire Command Room

The Fire Control Room is in the southwest corner of the center core, next to stair 1. Features include: Fire Alarm Panel, Automatic smoke control panel, Elevator Annunciator, Communications for fire phones and building PA, Key box, Magnetic lock override, and a direct dial telephone. There is a master key in the Knox box that will allow access to the fire control room.

Alarm Panel

The fire alarm panel is in the fire command room. Each device is addressed on the fire alarm panel. There is a clean agent fire protection system in the computer closet on the 5th floor that dispenses Novec 1230. This system is controled by a separate panel that must be reset prior to resetting the main panel.

Elevators

There are 4 elevator cars, all of which operate on Phase 1 / Phase 2 fireman service. Elevator keys are located in the key box in the fire command room. Every floor and car has a lunar key opening and a firefighter communication jack. Each shaft is pressurized when the building is in alarm. There is an elevator car selector switch in the first floor elevator lobby, which is accessed using an elevator key. When the building is operating on emergency power, one passenger car at a time can be selected by turning the key to 1 - 4. Car 1 - Car 4 are all passenger cars in the center core lobby. Cars 1 and 2 share a shaft, as do cars 3 and 4. All cars service floors 1 through 8. Elevator equipment for all cars is in the penthouse and can be accessed using either stairwell. Floors 6, 7, and 8 are inaccessible without the magnetic key card found in the knox box, unless the car is in phase 2 fireman service.

Stairwells

There are two stairwells in the building, both of which are pressurized when the building is in alarm. Both stairwells contain a Class 1 standpipe. Each floor of both stairwells contain a fire phone jack, or in the case of the 3rd and 7th floors, a full fire phone handset. Floors 6, 7, 8, and the penthouse are locked and require a magnetic key card to access the floor from the stairwell. A key card is in the knox box. Stairwell locks can be manually over-ridden by means of a key switch in the Fire Control Room.
Stair 1 is located in the south end of the center core and contains the floor isolation valves for the sprinkler system. The valves are located within easy reach when standing on the landing. Both stairwells allow walk-up access to the penthouse and roof areas. The master key on each firefighter key ring will unlock the doors to the roof and penthouse areas. Both standpipes continue all the way up to the roof level and there is an additional fireman's phone jack at the roof level.
Floor 8 has a private stairway to the penthouse / roof level. No fire barriers exist between the penthouse and the 8th floor.

Automatic Unlocking

Floors 6, 7, and 8 require a keycard to access each floor, unless the panel is in alarm. There are switches in the Fire Control Room to over-ride the stairwell locks.

Automatic Suppression

The building is fully covered by automatic sprinklers. Floor isolation valves are in Stair 1 (south stairwell). Floor isolation valves are within easy reach of the stairwell landings. There is a clean agent fire protection system in the computer closet on the 5th floor that dispenses Novec 1230.

Standpipes

Class 1 standpipes are located in each stairwell with hook-ups on floors 1 through 8 and at roof level.

Smoke Control

The automatic smoke removal system will pressurize the floor above and below while venting the fire floor as reported by the alarm panel. Each stairwell and elevator shaft pressurizes automatically. The smoke control panel is in the Fire Control Room.

Fire Communications

Communication with the Fire Control Room is made possible by Fireman phone Jacks that are located on each floor and the penthouse of both stairwells, each elevator lobby on each floor of the building, each elevator car, and in the penthouse elevator equipment room. On the 3rd and 7th floors of each stairwell, a full fireman phone handset is present instead of a handset jack.
There is also a public address system located in the Fire Control Room that can be used to address individual floors, or the entire building.
