All, David Freeman actually raises a good point here: the power/control cables – which we know to be direct burial and not in the best condition, to put it mildly – will be under this proposed concrete. I guess the question we need to ask is what happens if the MALSR fails due to bad cables? Will FAA even bother to repair it? It is my understanding that Tony Williams has put in a request for a replacement MALSR, but it is a 3-year process for FAA to get around to acting on such requests, assuming that it might be approved. Maybe the answer is just to go ahead and deal with whatever happens when it happens? From what I understand, to resolve our issues with the MALSR 1400' bar pedestal being submerged in mud and water and the road erosion, TX DOT and the contractor are going to pour a 10' cement pad around the 1400' bar that will slope away from the bar for drainage, and that more cement will be poured north of the bar and along the road, also for drainage/erosion purposes. I hope this is satisfactory, since there was no one else there representing the FAA's concerns. The only issue that may cause some future problems is that when the power or control cables for the MALSR need to be replaced, they will be located under the 10' square pad and under the cement just north of the 1400' bar. We did not request that the contractor place conduit inside or under the cement for the cables. Someone such as yourself or at the Regional level may want to request that the existing MALSR cables, that will be located under the planned cemented areas, be placed inside conduit.
