Tom,
We went through a year of research on the pavers during which we spoke with a number of manufacturers, contractors and other municipalities. It was a good investment considering the
amount of pavers that we have in the Town of Addison. What we found was there was a million different ways to install pavers, each with their particular strengths and weaknesses. We
took the best of these ideas and created the attached standard.
The purpose for the 10% cement in the granite bedding sand is to minimize the risk of pumping the sand out of the joints. At only 10% cement, the pavement base should still remain quite
flexible.
The most important component of the detail is the joint sand comprised of granite sand and polymer. Techniseal HP2 Polymeric Jointing Sand produced by Pavestone is the only manufacturer
I know of that has this product available off the shelf and my understanding is that they added it to their product line just a few months ago. I have attached the submittal we have
used on other paver projects in town.
If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Clay Barnett, P.E.

Tom,
I am copying Clay so that he can respond as we have just done similar work in the Vitruvian area.
I am in New Mexico with cooler weather. :)

Subject: Belt Line Pavers - Sand in Standards
Nancy and Slade – I am reviewing the contractor’s submittal for sand used for paver installation.
Looking at the Town standard for median paving (SD-P14) I see references to the Bedding sand being comprised of 90% natural or crushed granite sand and 10% Portland cement. I included
this mix in the project specifications.
The contractor’s submittal is silent on providing this 90:10 mix. However, before commenting further, I wanted to confirm that including 10% Portland cement should apply to this project
or if this needs further discussion. Most flexible paver designs only use sand, so I wanted to check on this detail further.
Thank you in advance.
Tom
