Jason, Responses below. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Clay Barnett, P.E. It seems that you are correcting more than a couple of his calculations and his figures. These types of comments are not uncommon to drainage studies. There are a lot of variables and sometimes things can get lost to an engineer that would make the model less accurate. Although no model is perfect, the review is intended to provide another perspective on the drainage study that hopefully makes the model more accurate. This helps to insure that the model is accurate enough to design by and that any consequences of the design would not endanger the public. (3) Are you asking him to just identify and label the culverts, or you asking him to show the culverts and depict how the flow of water will be affected. We are bringing to his attention that the model may not include all of the drainage area that flows to the creek. I will add a statement that states: “verify the drainage area that contributes to this culvert and include the area in the models.” That should make it clearer. (4) Are you asking them to re-check the storm sewers to determine their actual shape, ellipse-shaped or arch-shaped? We are bringing to his attention that these structures may not be properly modeled. I will add a statement that states: “verify the shape of the culverts and adjust the model as needed.” That should make it clearer. (7) and (8) It seems they left out a lot of information from their plan, or is this normal for a project of this size and scope? Some of it is information that they have to have done, but did not include in the report for whatever reason. Other items are just differences in how to apply differing engineering rules. The outcome will be the same, but it may yield a slightly different answer. In both cases, these types of comments are not uncommon for a drainage report that is attempting to reclaim property that is flooded often.
