Kleinfelder wouldn’t make an official suggestion for the gravel to clay mix proportions, but they eventually suggested a 50/50 mix may work. I believe they are running a proctor on this
mix to confirm.  Sunbelt is assembling a proposal with options to remove all the pea gravel and replace with 100% clay or to mix the pea gravel with clay.  One thing to keep in mind
is that we are backfilling a larger void than originally proposed due to the pea gravel in the former tankpit.

 

There are also two concrete footers that are present in the tankpit which supported the canopy.  We need to confirm with Clay/Nancy if they need these removed. The bid spec accounted
for the canopy supports by stating that the supports would be cut off below grade. At the time of the proposal, I didn’t realize that there may be utilities running through the tankpit
which may encounter the concrete footers. I thought we were simply concerned with road base stability.

 

It may be in the best interest of the Town to have UDR’s dirt contractor (Weir) bid the backfilling project as well. Not because Sunbelt is incapable, but Weir has large equipment right
next door, are already working directly with Kleinfelder, and may be significantly less expensive.
