The median nose cannot be poured at the same time as the slip form paving is being done. A continuous pour is impossible, these always have to be hand poured separately. The revised detail did not have a given thickness for the slab beneath the curb/pavers. The “see pavement and reinforcement details” does not imply a given thickness either. So what detail would we be following since there was no detail other than the reduction of curb height from back to front? The revised median detail shows a continuous pour from the street pavement through the drop slab under the median nose pavers. If this detail had been followed, there would be no need for hand excavation, no need for a longitudinal butt joint, no need for hand pouring of the median nose areas, and no additional costs would have occurred except for this increase in pavement thickness from 4” to 10”. It has been proposed to delete the 4” at the unit price and increase the 10” at the unit price which does not work. The 10” contractual unit price is for main lain slip form paving which is not applicable to this instance. These median noses will require hand excavation to protect the in place paving, longitudinal butt joint around the perimeter, very small choppy pours, require forming for paver drops and are not comparable to the existing 10” paving unit price. I have listed the units for the 4” and 10” paving as well as added a lump sum figure per median nose to cover the increase. This price also include the excavation of the additional 6” and the haul off of this material to the south portion of the job. We would request immediate evaluation of this price so we can authorize JRJ to proceed this week with this work as to avoid going into liquidated damages for these noses. Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns. No added days are requested for this work since they are being replaced already.
