Little; Joel Massey Cc: Nick Jacob; cbarnett@addisontx.gov; rdj@kevinsloanstudio.com; Tom Lamberth Subject: RE: VP - Grading Downstream of the Ponte Weir Attached is a map showing the four sections in Reach 1 that were checked for grade conformance. Section 6.216 at the downstream weir appears to be close to the proposed grades. Section 6.272 (approx. 250 feet upstream of the weir) shows a flowline elevation of 539.28. The proposed grade at the centerline of this creek at this section is 536.00 so this area is approximately 3.3 feet too high. At Section 6.303 (about 175 feet upstream) the centerline elevation is 538.79. The proposed grade at this location was suppose to be 536.00 as well, so this area is about 2.79 feet high. The upstream section at Ponte (Section 6.319) was not yet graded so the elevations shot at this time are not relevant. The contractors explanation that grading in the creek was terminated when they hit tree roots is viable. I suggest that we walk this area of the creek and make a determination on whether to try to cut the channel further in this Reach without damage to the existing root systems that are holding the trees along the embankment in place. Weir says they are done, but it does not look right to me. From: Joel Massey [mailto:jmassey@icon-engineers.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 2010 2:02 PM To: Eric T. Little Cc: Nick Jacob; Barnett, Clay; Rdj@kevinsloanstudio.com; Bruce Dunne; Tom Lamberth Subject: VP - Grading Downstream of the Ponte Weir Eric, Per the discussion this morning concerning the grading downstream of the Ponte Weir, I have reviewed the grading plan for this area and it reflects the intended grading design. An exhibit, in PDF format, is attached for your reference. The water flows over the Ponte weir onto a splash structure where the water level is normally one foot deep. At the end of the splash structure the creek bottom is one foot below the structure to the typical edge depth of two feet. The creek bottom slopes 0.5 feet for 10 feet and then down at a three to one slope to maximum depth determined by the width of the creek. This creates a deep pool below the weir structure that ends at the point where the creek bottom narrows to the existing channel. Remember, while this is a flowing creek, it is also a reservoir at a minimum depth of two feet controlled by the lower weir and Ponte weir. Please let me know if I have not answered the questions you had. Joel A. Massey Project Manager icon Consulting Engineers, Inc. Bicentennial Financial Center 250 W.
