I'm on it. On my way out to the site now. ________________________________ From: Nancy Cline To: Eric T. Thank you, Nancy From: Slade Strickland Sent: Monday, May 24, 2010 11:33 AM To: Clay Barnett Cc: Nancy Cline; Lea Dunn; Ron Lee; David Wilde Subject: Wildlife Observation Deck Pier Drilling - Vitruvian Park Importance: High For the record I met with Jennifer Haynes this morning with North Texas to look at the wildlife observation deck pier locations, as we discussed last week during the weekly meeting. When I got there they were in the process of pulling a huge track hoe toward one of the Live Oaks. I asked Jennifer what they were doing and she replied, “we are going to remove the vegetation underneath the tree”. I told them to stop immediately because the teeth on the track hoe bucket would virtually remove every feeder root the trees have in the upper 1-4 inches of the soil. I also told Nick and her that the vegetation would need to be cut down, and then all piers located before any drilling takes place. My understanding from last week’s meeting was that the piers would be staked, and then we could assess whether or not any major roots would be impacted by the pier drilling. This was obviously not their plan this morning. In addition, I noticed Andres has created a construction road within the drip line of the preserved live oak where the half-circle retaining wall is to be constructed. I told Nick and Jennifer to cease any further access within the drip line of this tree, and that remedial work will need to take place immediately to alleviate the compaction. This means they need to scarify the soil surface as soon as possible to allow some air movement into the soil, and then a thick (3”) layer of mulch needed to be added. Finally, Wade and Jennifer told me that a large drill rig would need to be used to drill the piers as deep as 25’. I reminded them that we discussed using a two man auger, but they both said it would not get deep enough. I don’t know why they did not bring this up last week when we discussed it. Then Wade told her to look for an alternative rig that was smaller to avoid limb damage. Jennifer agreed to have Rebcon find this equipment. I told them that regardless of the type of equipment, they must use thick plywood under the equipment to reduce compaction under the tree. We did this in the backyard at Town Hall when the gabions were put in and it worked well. They need to post large signs near this grove of trees stating “Stay away from trees” with chain link fencing on the perimeter drip line. I told them to stop any activity in this area until the team can regroup to review alternative plans. I am concerned about the lack of attention to preserving these trees. They need to realize that we are talking $100,000+ if these trees die due to their negligence. I also told Jennifer to get orange construction fencing up asap to prevent further access within the drip line of the half-circle tree. She said they will have it up this afternoon. I asked Ron Lee to go by to confirm that they did this, and to also take photographs of the existing road.
