This seems to meet our revised intent to remove the bolted connections and change the main columns to tubesteel. The only thing that we have changed is the the support columns from I-beams to tube steel so that the electrical for the lights would not be exposed. The previous change to bolted connections was only made because of KSS's request to powder coat the trellis ILO galvanized. The pricing for this change to powder coating and bolted connections was significant and both UDR and the ToA chose to go back to galv with welded connections but keep the tubesteel columns. Hope that clears things up a bit. We recommend shop welding as many components as feasible to minimize the number of field welds. We further recommend that the hot dip galvanization process conform to ASTM A123. All of which are concerning the extensive amount of field welding and applied coating after welding. This approach defeats the purpose of a uniform Hot Dipped Galvanizing coating that has alternatively been directed. I do not see any reference to how all of the top trellis pieces are to be attached to the pergola beams. I am assuming that they too are proposed to be field welded. The shop drawing proposed application indicated to "touch up with cold galvanizing spray" is completely unacceptable. Application of any coating on areas that can be seen from the ground will not match the galvanizing color and will require continual maintenance to prevent rust and staining of the lower members. I recommend that bolted connections for joints that are visible from the ground (i.e. all of the beams) be reconsidered and for all other connections, that the proposed field welding repair be specifed including procedures, materials & coating warranty. We understand ICON's concern about bolted connections, but UDR is not interested in paying the upcharge for this and the ToA isn't interested in the additional maintenance required to bi-annually tighten all these bolts. Per our previous conversations about this, if the finish on the trellis is not acceptable to the ToA or UDR, we will pursue field painting.
