This coating system can be successful with the right products and if applied properly. Since the coatings are coming form to different suppliers, the requirements of the warranty on the coating system should be explored for the Owner’s best interest. Will the warranty remain intact? If I can be of any assistance in this matter please do not hesitate to contact me. From: Eric T. You don't want to mix manufacturers on field applied coatings. However it was very rare to have the shop applied primer match the field coatings. Of course I only built 20 or so composite elevated water towers, so my knowledge base is kind of limited. Hammerberg ; Nick Jacob; Eric T. Little; cbarnett@addisontx.gov ; David T. Hernandez Subject: Arch coatings Robert, This morning while David was onsite he asked about the coatings on the arches. He stated that when working on water tanks coating suppliers do not like to mix and match products. I spoke with Amanda with Halff and Associates about this and asked which product was used for the zinc primer coat. Amanda was able to respond with Carboline. The contractor Austin Bridge and Road has chosen to use Sherwin Williams as the intermediate and topping coats. The engineers at Halff and Associates do not have a problem with mixing coating manufacturers if the only reason is the blame game of who's coating failed. Halff has also indicated that they have limited experience dealing with coatings and coating thickness. Halff instructed Austin Bridge and Road to use manufacturers recommendations for coating thickness. Please respond if there are any other issues with using different products over or under each under. I will begin checking the specification book to see if there are any mil thickness requirements given. David was also checking the zinc coating on the arches and was averaging between 2.5 to 4.0 mils on the zinc coating. David also asked if we should continued checking the arches to have a base line on the zinc primer coat.
