Wade, As I mentioned during our phone conversation, I agree with Robert’s response below. What Austin has currently submitted is a “welding plan” and not a welding procedure as required by AWS D1.5. A welding procedure meeting the requirements of AWS D1.5 needs to be submitted and followed. In addition, welder certifications need to meet the requirements for the specific welding procedure. As we also discussed, the fillet weld that currently runs the length of the backer rod, in the path of the full penetration groove welds, is not acceptable. The backer rod should have been attached from the opposite side so as not to interfere with the groove weld. This needs to be corrected. Also, to clarify, the full penetration welds shown on the shop drawings are for the splice welds. The backer rods do not need to be attached with full penetration welds. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. Amanda Lara Halff Associates, Inc. The complete joint penetration welds as detailed in the plans will be tested with ultrasound and x-ray using the acceptance criteria in the AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code. The engineer of record has responded with comments to the “welding plan”. The contractor will need to provide a welding procedure that meets ALL of the requirements of the AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code. That said, the welder certifications will need to meet the requirements of the welding procedure that is provided for the project. If there are any questions regarding these requirements please do not hesitate to contact me. Hammerberg Subject: Plans and shop drawings Gentlemen, Kleinfelder has reviewed the plans and shop drawings provided by Halff and Associates and the shop drawings provided by Afco ( approved by Halff and Associates). It appears that all welds will be full penetration welds according to the detail in these plans. Furthermore there has not been a welding procedure submit in accordance to AWS D1.5 code. This code is referenced on page S1-22 under erection notes. Austin has only submitted a welding plan. Kleinfelder and Ruiz Testing service plan to perform testing in accordance with the AWS D1.5 code. If this was not the intention please advise. I am includeing the shop drawing details with this email so we can all address the same issue. Please see page 2 of the shop drawings.
