The contractor may use the desired cleaning method (Simple Green detergent with brushes) prior to the application of the top coat, but not prior to the application of the intermediate coat. For your benefit, we’ve attached a chart that provides basic definitions for the different levels of cleaning. In addition, “Hand Tool Cleaning” (SSPC-SP2) or “Power Tool Cleaning” (SSPC-SP3) is the only surface preparation required per the product data sheet under the “Substrates & Surface Preparation” section for touch-up of the Carbozinc 858 Primer. On page 2 of the product data sheet under “Curing Schedule”, there is an unlimited recoat time, but loose chalk or salts which may have formed on the shop applied primer must be removed in accordance with good painting practice. AB&R’s painting subcontractor will ensure that any loose chalk or salts will be removed with brushes, detergent, and water blasting. As for the Intermediate Coat Carboguard 893, the “Commercial Blast” (SSPC-SP6) requirement Halff referenced on the product data sheet is only applicable when painting bare steel. Commercial Blasting involves completely removing all rust, mill scale and old paint, which would inherently remove the Carbozinc primer. The only surface preparation required by the data sheet for painting over the primer is to employ adequate methods to remove dirt, dust, oil and all other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion of the coating. This too will be accomplished with brushes, detergent, and water blasting. As for the Top Coat Carbothane 134 HS, the only surface preparation needed is to ensure that surfaces are clean, dry, and contaminant free. Since the top coat will be applied after the appropriate cure time of the intermediate coat, no surface preparation will be needed unless weather conditions cause contamination. In which case, it will be cleaned with brushes, detergent, and water blasting. I’ve attached the product data sheets for all three Carboline products, as well as the SSPC Chart with applicable surface preparation definitions and have highlighted the pertinent information. (After a conversation with the Carboline rep, it is clear that we misinterpreted the data sheet.) The Vitruvian arches need only be prepared with SSPC-SP2 or SSPC-SP3 rated methods prior to application of the intermediate coat. It should be noted that according to the Carboline rep, the field welds need to be prepared with some variety of power tool (wire brush or similar) to roughen the surface or the paint will not adhere to the steel in those areas.
