Joel: I agree 100 percent. I love your idea about the pre-construction safety lunch. Winning the FAA construction safety award will definitely be one of our goals, and I bet others will buy-in too. I would like to make it our goal for Addison to be in contention for that award for 2011 for our runway construction project. It’s a complex project with some creative phasing and just a lot going on, so I think it would definitely qualify from the level-of-difficulty standpoint. I think with our communication plans and our emphasis on safety we should be able to qualify from the project safety standpoint as well; we just have to perform up to our high standards. We are allowed to nominate our own project, so if we do things right we should be able to present a pretty compelling case for the award. One idea that I would like to put forward is to hold a pre-construction safety lunch for the people who will be key to maintaining safety as this project goes forward. I would propose to include our airport operations and maintenance personnel, FAA Tech Ops (Tony Williams and his guys), FAA Tower (Blaine, Mathew Zielsdorf, and whoever else they would like to bring, the engineers (Garver and Addison Public Works) and inspection personnel, and contractor on-site management and safety personnel, plus foremen and shift leads. Not only would we be able to exchange contact information for everyone, but we would also have the opportunity for everyone to get to know who is who and put names to faces. More importantly, we can set the tone and expectations for job safety, to really make that a priority and let everyone know that our goal is to earn the FAA award for excellence in construction safety. That could be a nice incentive for the entire team: the airport, the engineers and inspectors, the FAA personnel, and the contractors and all of their subs: to be able to say they were a part of the project that won the annual award for excellence in construction safety. I think it is going to be very important to include the subs, because I think that is where you are more likely to run into problems. What do you think? Can we work this in?
