It appears that the signs on the west (tower) side of the runway have the runway numbers backwards. They are showing "33-15" instead of "15-33" per the following section from the Airman's Information Manual (AIM). These signs need to be corrected, as it could lead an "unaware" pilot to turn the wrong way on the runway. 1. Runway Holding Position Sign. This sign is located at the holding position on taxiways that intersect a runway or on runways that intersect other runways. The inscription on the sign contains the designation of the intersecting runway as shown in FIG 2-3-24. The runway numbers on the sign are arranged to correspond to the respective runway threshold. For example, “15-33” indicates that the threshold for Runway 15 is to the left and the threshold for Runway 33 is to the right. Harland B. I have attached an excel file that contains a list of all signs located on the airfield. For this weekend closure the following signs and pads need to be removed (Numbers correspond with the excel file): 4, 11, 18, 26, 38, 45, 51, 54 (numbers are highlighted in purple) The removal of the sign and pads is already a pay item within this project. Removal of these signs does lead to having a taxiway intersection with no direction sign, i.e. getting onto Alpha from the taxiway stub. If you look in item 3.h. in the attachment, it states that at complex intersections, adding location signs to ensure the correct turn has been made and location can be confirmed are specifically mentioned. Therefore, our opinion would be to add “A” location signs to the back of all the taxiway stub direction signs in order to provide this guidance to pilots. The complexity arises out of the parallel taxiway being too close to the runway. The signs which would need to have an “A” location sign added would be: 3, 7, 9, 17, 23, 25, 36, 41, and 48. Please note that if a panel is replaced on one side of a sign, all the panels must be replaced on that side. For example, if an “A” location sign is added to a side of a 2-module sign that previously had two blank modules, then a new “A” location sign and a new blank would be installed. The sign numbers that are highlighted in blue are signs that will need to be relocated. These signs would move further away from the intersection, a sufficient distance for better visibility and operational use to pilots in seeing the mandatory hold signs. The change to relocate the existing taxiway guidance signs and to add the Taxiway Alpha panel on the back of the signs mentioned will be issued through plan revisions as soon as possible. Again for this weekend, the removal of the signs and pads mentioned above will be the only work need to be completed this weekend. The other sign revisions may not begin until instructed through plan revisions. If you have any questions just let me know.
