Clay:
Your comments are exactly right, in summary:
· The design doesn’t state what design method was used to arrive at the recommended pavement sections
· There are no anticipated aircraft mix and frequency
· They don’t show their subgrade strength assumptions or provide a geotech report
· We need the FAARFIELD design for each option
· We need a geotech report with recommendations for subgrade strength (k-value).
I did a quick design with a G-V using the ramp 1/week. I assumed a CBR of 7 by taking by looking at our geotech report for the runway. I came up with the following: 11” PCC over aggregate
base and subgrade.

Frank,
Could you have a look at the pavement design and let me know your thoughts? I want to do what makes sense, it is just hard for me to make that judgment with my limited amount of airport
design experience.

Lynn,
Attached is the documents you forwarded with the plan submittal received yesterday afternoon. We will review the plan submittal and return comments today as was agreed to in our meeting
at the first of the year.
In regards to the pavement design, the geotechnical report provides a pavement section that was performed utilizing the FAARFIELD software and is in accordance with FAA Advisory Circular
150/5320-6E. The geotechnical report recommends a 9” pavement section over a 10” base. The letter that was received recommends a 7” pavement section over a 6” base. Additionally,
the letter does not address anticipated aircraft loads nor does it address expected life spans. Finally, it does not state what standards were used to design the pavement section.
I have attached a recap of our conversation on January 25, 2011 in which we discuss the importance of utilizing the FAA Advisory Circular for civil Airport paving guidelines and standards
in the design of optional ramp paving specifications. In the absence of any additional data, the pavement design provided in the geotechnical report shall be utilized for the ramp area
pavement.
It is our goal to continue to work with you to make this a successful project. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Clay Barnett, P.E.

Clay,
I noticed a couple of drafting items that did not get changed on the drainage area map (inlets numbers) and storm sewer profile (some of the HG numbers and the detention outlet opening
size). I am having new Sheets 4 and 9 sent to you this morning to replace the ones in the sets sent yesterday. They should be there by 9:00 AM.
Sorry about that. Please call with any questions.
